Extension PropertySet system

Version : 001 (16/10/00)

Definition

The concept of 'Extension PropertySet system' defines the mechanism that can be used to expand the existing IFC objects by adding properties to them that are not defined by the IAI. Since definitions for these properties can not be found in the IFC documentation it is very important that the extensions are documented and published - if the data is designed to be exchanged between different applications. Another use for the extension properties is to enable better round trip support inside an application. In this scenario applications write out proprietary information to the file that they use in case they receive the file back to the same application. This additional information allows these applications to round trip data without loss of information or visual accuracy. These 'proprietary extension PropertSets' are not included in the concept block / view documentation.

Technically the 'Extension PropertySet system' is almost exactly like the 'PropertySet system'. The only difference is, that the 'Extension PropertySet system' has an additional attribute for defining the definition source. For extension PropertySets defined and agreed by the BLIS project the definition source is 'BLIS'.
