Layered structure (material layers)

Version : 001 (18/06/00)

Definition

The IFC model has very limited support for describing material layers in a layered structure. It is possible to describe a structure with homogenous layers (layers that consist on one material). More complex structures are not supported by IFCs.

Currently the more appropriate way is to use the project type of e.g. a wall to get the layer information. In this system the information about the layers is not captured in the IFC model, only the type of the wall (e.g. WallType#1) is exchanged in the IFC file. Both the sending and receiving application have to have some agreement what that type means, but it can also mean quite different things to the different applications (e.g. level of detail)

View considerations

At the moment the concept of 'Layered structure (material layers)' is not very useful for any view.
